No One Held Her Heart

her life was marred by a wounded heart
the rising sun tore her apart
thinkin’ of the lonely hours she’d have to kill
then back to bed, back to the pills

those long northern winters, the chill in the air
never quite cold enough to freeze her despair
her heart stayed warm, at least that never changed
despite the tears, despite the shame

Life is pain, they so often said
but that never chased the sorrow out of her head
sprinkles of joy they came and they carried her on
but no one held her heart, when the laughter was gone

when she was young, she had that style
those worn out jeans, that sunburned smile
but lives they change, when choices are made
and dreams are forgotten when hope slips away

Life is pain, they so often said
but that never chased the sorrow out of her head
sprinkles of joy they came and they carried her on
but no one held her heart, when the laughter was gone

the flashes of violence, the storms of regret
sadness collected ’longside mountains of debt
she could’ve run and she could’ve lied
so no one spoke about the pain in her eyes

her lonesome fade, the slow descent
a quiet burial, amidst forgotten friends
the final words, she whispered alone
my spirit died long ago, but now I’m going home

Life is pain, they so often said
but that never chased the sorrow out of her head
sprinkles of joy they came and they carried her on
but no one held her heart, when the laughter was gone
