Race 6: Crimson Chalice Saves the Day

With a spring in our step we headed for the paddock. We were looking for a sign to help us pick the winner. A couple of colts immediately caught our eye: Crimson Chalice and his rival TV Dinner. Both were last out winners and for TV Dinner he had done it in style. But that was five furlongs, quite a bit shorter, and we just weren’t sure if he’d stay the mile. So we looked again at Crimson Chalice. 1,000 pounds and mostly muscle. 16 hands and built for speed but he needed to tell us he’d win the tussle.

He must have heard us talk ‘cause at that moment he winked at us and we both felt a chill. His chestnut coat shimmered as he squealed to the paddock. A sign to us he had the will. Crimson Chalice was his name. The finest colt I’ve ever seen. He must have been sent by the heavens to save the day for my boy and me.

For us it was clear, there was no more debate, so we b-lined to the windows and bet with our logic. 9-2 was good but we were greedy. Half to win and the rest on exotics.

Chalice won for fun. He didn’t disappoint but the horses underneath didn’t do so well. So we whiffed on the exotics, but still had the win, and you’d thought we won a million by the volumes of our yells.

Crimson Chalice finally put us back in the black and bolstered our spirits with celestial mystique. I told Drew not to get too carried away but his smile said let’s not spoil our streak.
